My first trip to John O'Groats was in 1955. There was really nothing to see, except the Orkney Isles on the horizon. But as we had been to Cornwall earlier in the year and down to Land's End, it pleased us to say we'd been from one end of Britain to the other.

My second trip was more recent, and what a difference. The place still has nothing, but it has been commercialised. "The Last House in Britain", a pipe band performing, gift shops, postcards....all for the tourists

On a clear day the Orkney Islands can be seen from John O'Groats. A ferry service runs between the islands and the mainland.

Land's End and John O' Groats are at the extreme ends of Britain. Land's End is more dramatic. There really isn't all... more travel advice

It does sound and look like Land's End but the pipe bands make the difference.
