London Warnings Or Dangers

Warnings Or Dangers: Don't feed the pigeons
  • Tip Rating:
  • As children we always enjoyed going to Trafalgar Square to feed the pigeons. We'd buy seed from the local touts and see how close the pigeons would come. Would they feed from your hand?
Now all that is no longer ' politically correct'.
Pigeons are considered as vermin. Scattering seed is litter! So are bird droppings.
But somehow fun is being taken away from our children.

Warnings Or Dangers: Afraid of heights?

  • London - from the Eye. St pauls to right.

  • If you have any fear of heights, don't go on the London Eye.
I can't even go on the second floor of my own house, and don't open the curtains of my third-floor apartment in Cairo, and even feel peculiar watching films if heights are involved.
So, I should have refused the urgings of my husband and son to go on the Eye. As soon as I got into the glass bubble, I knew it was a mistake. While everyone crowded at the windows to see the view of London go slowly by, I sat on the wooden bench in the centre of the capsule, clinging for dear life to the wooden planks, only opening my eyes when particularly interesting comments were made. Needless to say I had to get my son to take the photos for me, including one of me cringing on my island of safety!
And we'd queued for hours to get tickets!!!

    Warnings Or Dangers: Evacuation warnings
  • Tip Rating:
  • With threatened terrorist attacks, warnings to evacuate the Underground occur from time to time. I once was trying to get to Edgeware Road and a tube train had just arrived. I was waiting for a different destination, and knew another train was due in 2 minutes. However, the train didn't leave, and an announcement was made to move down the platform away from the train Still it didn't leave. Those on the platform asked a worker who told us someone on the train had thrown something out onto the platform, and they were waiting for security to come in case it was a bomb.
Then we were told to leave the platform. A group of us headed for the nearest exit sign which took us up some stairs, but the door at the top was locked. We had to race down and find the main exit and eventually I decided to take a bus instead.
While waiting for a bus , I heard sirens and saw police cars and ambulances racing along; and announcements to evacuate the whole Underground station.
My friend whom I was to meet at Edgeware Road had heard there was an alert and had waited for me; but I still worry about that locked door and how we could have been trapped.
So , always head for the Main Exit.

Warnings Or Dangers: Watch your step
  • Tip Rating:
  • This warning applies to all places not just London, but it was brought home to me a few days ago.
I was walking along and suddenly found myself flat on the ground. No, I'd not had a seizure, not been attacked or knocked over, I had tripped on an uneven section of pavement. Fortunately the damage to my body was not serious, a few bruises only, and shock to the system. When this happened to my mother in Spain she ended up with a plaster cast on her leg after breaking bones.
So, keep a watch when walking, even on what seem to be well paved pathways- even more so in third world countries where there may not even be pavements.

Shane, Great comprehensive tips of London - one of my fav cities. No British Museum? Enjoyed reading about your fear of heights and the London Eye. We have red pillar mail boxes in Penang - British legacy. Cheers, SL
