Stockton looks like an industrial town as you approach from the motorway with stacks belching smoke, but as you enter the town that is all left behind you.The city centre is like any other with stores and pubs and charity shops.

It has played its part in England's history through the Stockton to Darlington railway , at the start of the Industrial revolution.

"Stockton-on-Tees is an industrial town which was once devoted to ship-building and iron work. It is famous for receiving the first passenger steam train, which arrived from Darlington on 27 September 1825. The first rail for the track was laid in 1822, and George Stephenson manned the first trip himself. This and other aspects of the area’s history are commemorated at the Green Dragon Museum."
