Kosti

by uglyscot - last update: Mar 15, 2007

Kosti lies on the eastern bank of the White Nile, about 280 km south of Khartoum. In the pre-Civil War days it was important as a port for boats and barges carrying passengers and goods to the south [Malakal and Juba].
It is only 50 km from Kenana where the huge sugar factory is. It is still a trade centre and , since the modern bridge crossing the White Nile was built at Kosti, it has become a main link on the road to El Obeid [Al Ubayyid]. The bridge is high and was built by an Italian company.

It is said the town was named after a prominent Greek trader, Costa, but I cannot verify this.

Looks like a pretty gloomy place but perhaps the banks of the Nile are more interesting?
