Rabat is a busy town, but what strikes you is how well arboured it is. All main streets have an avenue of trees whether palms or ficus. There are parks too. T he architecture is a blend of Arab, French and modern and somehow it works.
Rabat began as a Phoenician fishing village about 800BC on the banks of the Bou regreg Estuary.
It has a different atmosphere to Casablanca. People are less interested in foreigners and keep themselves more to themselves.
Like Casablanca , it also lies on the Atlantic coast. |
| | In Morocco it seems most of the minarets are square in shape compared to the circular ones in Cairo and elsewhere. |
| | Across the estuary from Rabat is its twin town of Sale which is more traditional and conservative than Rabat. Go there to the Artisan village - ilamar, and pick up some pottery as souvenirs. |
