Egypt's Mediterranean city | The western end of Alexandria Bay |
Alexandria lies on a most wonderful sweep of bay. The Corniche is 25 km long . The picture shows Qait Bey in the backround to the right, built on the site of the old Pharos lighthouse. There is much to see from museums and catacombs , and do from swimming to sight seeing. It is home to the new Alexandria library- a modern piece of architecture, to The Montazah palace of the late King Farouk, and to Roman and Egyptian archaeological sites, both on land and under water. It is a Mediterraneun city, so you do not feel as if you are in Africa.. |
| | Montazah Palace This Disney-like castle lies to the east of Alexandria bay. It was King Farouk's summer Palace. Originally built by Abbas II, it was restored by King Fuad I. It is an amazing piece of architecture in a great situation. The gardens in summer are a blaze of colour and wandering through the grounds is a pleasant way to spend an afternoon. The grounds are extensive [350 acres] and there is a small harbour. |
| Mosaics in Villa of Birds |
| | Villa of Birds Those interested in the past are not neglected in this city. There are Egyptian and Roman antiquities to be seen. Beside the semi-circular Roman theatre has been uncovered the so-called Villa of Birds, because there is a mosaic floor with brightly coloured birds. This has been covered by a structure which protects the mosaics, so hopefully the colours will not fade. |
