Sharjah lies on the Arabian Gulf. It is less developed than Abu Dhabi and Dubai , and has a more traditional population. Immigrant workers also tend to live in this area because housing is less expensive. There is the gold suq, and beside it another covered market where interesting local crafts and antiques can be found. Old wooden doors and windows can be bought either as decoration or made into coffee tables. |
| | The Beach Lying as it does on the Gulf, Sharjah has a long corniche and beach. Families congregate on the weekend [Friday and Saturday] and public holidays, but women do not normally go swimming. If you want to swim, it is better to pay to use the facilities of one of the hotels, like the Kempinski in Ajman. The water is warm and the beach is sandy, but beware of getting burnt. The combination of sea and sun is very strong and only a short time can leave you like a lobster! |
off the beaten track Sharjah is not just the area along the corniche, but has another outlet to the sea at Khor Fakkan. To get there means a long journey by road passing through the smaller emirate states. It is interesting to see how the colour of the land changes from one state to the other- from white, yellow to black and other shades in between. Colourful shops selling different commodities from fruit, flowers, handicrafts and pottery can be seen. And then the mountains and the sea. | | |

lynnehamman Tue May 5, 2009 11:01 UTC This looks like a better alternative to Dubai! I expect that it is catching up fast, though. Good page, Shane | evaanna Mon Jan 23, 2006 16:20 UTC The place looks very exotic to me. Would like to see it but for the heat. Isn't it a pity that the old style houses are disappearing? |
