Driving on the outskirts of Dubai , there are giant pylons stalking the land, with warnings about the overhead cables. I always feel relief when we have driven past them.
They are a contrast to all the imaginative architectural structures going up, but when you drive past them everyday , you begin to see a strange beauty in them too

beware sunburn

Dubai is HOT. In the winter months it is quite pleasant but in the summer it is very hot and also humid. Fortunately most buildings are air-conditioned as are cars, but many tourists are only interested in getting tanned and relaxing by water.
I managed to get burned in the winter, so in the summer limit my time in the pool to before 9.30 am and after 5pm However I have seen some people lounging in the sun as mid day approached, and then having a dip and sitting at the edge of the pool, before starting the procedure all over again.

Yes The man in the photo had a great tan and used sunscreen, but still the skin must be getting damaged.

When the sun is overhead, at least cover your back and shoulders with a t-shirt.

dusty driving conditions

When there is dust in the air , driving conditions are difficult as visibility becomes severely reduced. Dust swirls across the road, even in town.
One morning it was windy and a bit dusty, but we wanted to go to Festival City on the edge of town. The drive became increasingly more difficult as we went further into the 'desert'. On our way back we saw a couple of cars who had gone off road and got bogged down in the sand.
It was spooky driving with nothing on the horizon when you knew there were in fact multi-storey tower blocks ahead.
Once away from the major construction areas things were better, but still far from perfect.
Care is needed and remember Dubai drivers drive fast and don't obey rules.
This particular dusty day made the headlines of the local papers.

shop around if medical treatment needed

If you need medical treatment, it is wiser to shop around. I needed some dental work done and went with my daughter to a private Dental Clinic in Dubai [I will not mention the name for obvious reasons]. My daughter had been recommended to go there, but had to wait 3 hours until she had 6 fillings done.
I had some minor surgery done which cost me an arm and a leg, and follow up was going to leave me with nothing left! So I asked my son-in-law to find somewhere else. I found a great Jordanian dentist in Sharjah who did the job for a quarter of the price.
I heard the first dentist discussing with his assistant how much to charge an Emirati woman for medication- four and a half times the price in the shops. Scandalous.

So either have all treatment done before you travel, and in an emergency ask around.
