Qatar

The Corniche, Doha
When I first visited Doha, it seemed a poorer relation of the richer countries in the Gulf.
Last time I visited Doha, there had been considerable development. New Malls , better roads and a general feeling of confidence hit me.

Although a small country there are attempts to make it attractive to visitors.
There is a long beautiful Corniche beside the Bay. It is a nice place to go for a walk.
There is the traditional local market where bedouin cushions can be purchased.
There is now a fine new bookshop.
The climate is hot and humid in summer but more pleasant at other times of the year.
Sealine

Water and water sports

Because Qatar is a peninsula, one is never far from the water.
To attract visitors who enjoy water sports such as jet skiing ,there is Sealine, a considerable distance from Doha.
In the Bay itself there was an artificially created island- Palm Island.
Children could have pony rides or enjoy the water in the paddling pool.
Adults [males] could swim in the sea. But beware, the sea floor is rather rocky.
A variety of attactive shells could be found at the water's edge and on the spit.
It was a nice place to go with the family for the day. But all good things come to an end in the name of Progress and according to frankcanfly it has now been demolished.
Doha Zoo- water birds

The Dunes and the Zoo

If you have a 4 wheel drive vehicle, it is well worth taking a trip up to the dunes. Although climbing up the sand is tough on the calf muscles, it is worth the attempt as you can then see over to the oil fields, and see the rigs with flares of burning oil.
A favourite for families is Doha Zoo, which has a variety of animals in an attractive setting.

I'm sorry to tell you that Palm Tree Island has been demolished, it's just a sand bar now..... I think they're making way for 'progress'

Nice Doha page! I've always wondered if Doha will develop into another Dubai - seems to be heading that way.

It all looks very modern and elegant. I wonder what the water birds think of this modern setting?
