Beirut is a city that has faced many troubles in recent decades, but is slowly rising from the ashes again. It has a long history-ruins from Roman times have been unearthed during construction. |
| | Although there are many new and restored buildings, side by side can be seen the casualties of the war. Some buildings are pock-marked with bullet holes, others have lost their upper storeys. |
There is a long promenade along the Mediterranean Sea. One place that attracts people is Rochau, where there are two stacks in the sea, one of which has an arched hole in it. Divers and canoists like to pass through it. There are cafes nearby where you can sit and watch this activity. | | |
