Amman-capital of Jordan

by uglyscot - last update: May 11, 2005

Like many other capitals in the world, Amman was built on [7?] hills. Looking from our hotel window it seems to stretch to the horizon- all white buildings, big and small and tall.
Its original name was Rabbath-Ammon.
Anywhere in Jordan can be reached in no more than 5 hours from Amman.

There is the old part of the city : City Centre or Down Town; and the new West Amman.
The citadel
There is quite a lot to see in Amman. The Citadel is on a hill. There are columns of an old Roman Temple, and the archaeological museum with artefacts from prehistoric times up to the 15th Century.
The Museum is open from 8.00 to 18.00 daily except Fridays when it opens from 10.00 to 16.00. Entry costs 2JD.
There are many good hotels [5 star], especially in the 3rd Circle area, but also some smarter old villas to be seem when driving around.
Another Roman site is the Amphitheatre which holds about 6000 people, and is still used for performances.
