Old Delhi

Old Delhi street
Old Delhi was a walled city, chaotic and crowded. Today it gives a feel of real India compared to the more elegant New Delhi. The sheer number of people moving in the streets, the motorbikes, taxis, buses, auto-rickshaws and cycle-rickshaws in a city where one of the traffic rules seems to be to sound your horn. I thought Cairo was bad, but this is no less noisy.
The day we went to Old Delhi there were fewer people and cars than usual because there were several things going on in town [a parade, a cricket match between Pakistan and India], and it was a holiday. Nonetheless, we got the general idea.
Cycle -rickshaws are common here, but are banned in New Delhi.
The Red Fort
Our guide was a disaster. He told us there was nothing to see within the walls of the Red Fort, though other Vters had spoken otherwise. He was in a hurry to move to his next client on obviously after we had been held up in traffic jams because of the parade and cricket fans. So, we had to forego the trip, and decided to do it later. My accident put paid to that. never mind, next time.
The Red fort, aka Lal Qila was built by hah Jahan in 1638 of red sandstone. It was here that the National Flag of India was raised for the first time when India gained independence from Britain on 15 August 1947

I decided to shift almost all my tips from New Delhi to this page as
I cannot really decide where Old and New Delhi begin and end when it comes to the historical places.

Great page on Delhi, Shane. We loved the Q'tub Minaar complex-that Iron Pillar is something else! The coffee house that you visited-there is one in Calcutta too that is very famous, and we HAD to visit it- it was an interesting experience!Nice pictures.

Humayun Tomb certainly resembles the Taj Mahal. The Qutab Minar site looks very interesting and worth a visit.
