I am living in Ålesund and am a former teacher at Ålesund College. In the center of the town there are many buildings from the Art Nouveau period.
If you are interested in out-of-door life there are many opportunities for fishing in fjords and skiing/hiking in the mountains. There are many huts; some of them open for travelers. If you intend to visit Geiranger ( #1 on the list of Lonely Planet Scandinavia) you can stop at Grotli and walk 5 hours west and north to Danskehytta. If you drive to the far west there is a lighthouse at Runde near the bird cliffs, you may spend the night there.
In the county to the south you will find the big glacier, Jostedalsbreen. I?ll recommend stopping in Loen and taking the good path from Tjugen farm. After 5 hour walking (if you are in good shape and have warm clothes) you will arrive at a stone tower, Skålatårnet. It is a fine view from 1800 meter above sea level !
There are many other moutain trips possible. If you use a bicycle there are many possible routes.
Camping fields near the ocean often have boats and fishing equipment for rent.

Hyggelig å se at det er flere aktive VTere i fylket. Går ut fra at navnet på hjemstedet henger sammen med VTs manglende evne til a takle disse hersens norske bokstavene...
