Chiado is the best shopping neighborhood. It is right next to Baixa/downtown, and leads up to the Bairro Alto quarter. Here is a mall called Armazens do Chiado and several well-known international names like H&M, Zara, and Foot Locker along with the more luxurious shops like Cartier, Hermes, and the Portuguese fine porcelain shop, Vista Alegre. Also take a look at the shop of Ana Salazar, one of Portugal's top designers, and the turn-of-the-century hole-in-the-wall Luvaria Ulisses, guaranteed one of the most charming shops you'll see in the world.
On this picture is an old car that plays Fado as people go from store to store, making it even more pleasant to walk these streets.
What to buy: There are several bookshops in Chiado, many of them with a good selection of English-language books. The best is the old Bertrand, good for books about Lisbon and Portugal in general.
What to pay: Although Lisbon is not as inexpensive as it used to be, you can still find many bargains, and everything still tends to be much cheaper than in other European capitals.
Directions: You can walk here from downtown (from Rossio Square), or you can take the subway, getting off at the Baixa-Chiado station.

Amoreiras was Lisbon's first big shopping mall, opened in the 1980s. Now it has been surpassed in size and popularity by Colombo and Vasco da Gama malls, but this is an alternative to those looking for the typical shops from United Colors of Benetton to Hugo Boss, but with lesser crowds. The main reason for a visit however, is for the post-modern architecture of these towers that shocked the locals when it opened.
Directions: It's way off the tourist route, west of the Marques de Pombal roundabout, with no subway station within reasonable walking distance. Take a taxi.

Saldanha Square
Although this is not the largest of even the best shopping mall in the city, it does have the best food court of all of them. Here you won't find McDonald's or Pizza Hut, but rather healthier fast food (not an oxymoron) consisting of salads and soups.
What to buy: I highly recommend Go Natural, with all sorts of salads and self-service pre-prepared food from soups to sushi! It is mostly Mediterranean and Oriental -- pumpkin soup with almonds, shrimp wrap with Thai sauce, aloe vera yogurt with cereals are just some examples. See their website at www.gonatural.pt (only in Portuguese).
Also good is Vitaminas & Co., with excellent salads and fresh 100% juice.
Directions: Uptown Lisbon, in Saldanha Square.
Metro station: "Saldanha" on the yellow line.
