Manila

Back to the motherland...

Hong Kong to Manila via Cathay Pacific
written on 18 April 2005:

So I'm home now... my plan to escape winter in Toronto worked out marvelously as I was able to stay for about 4 months in the Philippines. The long 25 hour jouney alone was probably the worst part of my trip, but at the same time it was kind of relaxing not having to worry about anyone but myself for a change. I'll keep posting tips and pics as I resize them, for now enjoy the ones that I already have.

written on 2 February 2004:

After the long-ass flight from Toronto to Manila I was ready to party... seeing my family for the first time in 16 years was... hmm... words can't describe the feeling. To see the look on my dad's face when he saw them was priceless. Being the only member of his family to leave the Philippines, it was nice to see him reunited with his family. NAIA was very friendly. Currently happening is something called "WOW PHILIPPINES" to promote tourism within the country. We live in Caloocan, so needless to say, I experienced the horrible traffic from the moment we stepped off the plane. Driving by the squatters in Tondo (by what used to be Smokey Mountain) was quite depressing. Also, the pollution was incredible. I thought I was gonna suffocate inside the vehicle I was travelling in... eventually we got to Caloocan, and seeing everyone made me realize it was all worth it...

Poverty

Despite the fact that the Philippines is still considered a Third-World (YES THIRD WORLD), you never see anyone complain about the situation that they're in. It surprises me how offended people get when you classify the Philippines as a third-world country, but the truth is, minimum wage is P382/day. As of today's date (30.08.08) that would be $8.83 CDN/day.

Family

There is nothing more important than family. I could go on and on about this... and maybe I will someday... but for now I'll leave it at that. Look through my album for my pics.
