Stillwater, Minnesota

by gregoryr1m - last update: Aug 25, 2004

The town of Stillwater is itself on the National Registry of Historic Places. Hundred-year-old brick and limestone buildings that once housed merchants of the old logging town now are home to a host of antique shops, rare book dealers, world-class restaurants, bed & breakfast inns, historic trains, trolleys, and paddlewheel boats.

Stillwater is at it's best from early Spring to late Autumn. There's nothing like spendin the evening at The Freighhouse, on their deck, cocktail in hand, and over looking The St. Croix Rover watching the boats go by.

The Minnesota Zephyr

I love trains, especially Zephyrs. They're so romantic. It reminds me of a song by Johnny Mercer:

I took a trip on a train,
And I thought about you.
I passed the shadowy lanes,
And I thought about you.

Two or three cars,
Parked under the stars,
A winding stream.
*

All the big bands performed that song during WWII and the ambiance on The MN Zephyr is
that* of a dinning car from that period. See my must see activities for more information.

What else to do while you're in Stillwater?

Antique shopping of course. This is an antiquers paradise and Stillwater is saturated with antique shops but they're aren't inexpensive.
