"Split Rock Lighthouse State Park" Split Rock Lighthouse State Park by gregoryr1m

Pretty as a picture postcard

After a short walk from the lighthouse to Lake Superior, you happen upon this scene. Almost every photograph of Split Rock Lighthouse looks similar to the one in my photograph because it's the only trail that leads down to the lake where you can take the same picturesque photo.

It was very foggy the day I visited Split Rock Lighthouse in August 2004. The fog adds to it's mystery and usefulness of the lighthouse. The cliff is 130 feet high.

In 1905, 2 ships wrecks occurred in Lake Superior causing congress to consider a lighthouse in the area. By 1910, the United States Lighthouse Service completed Split Rock Lighthouse and operated it until 1939 when the U.S Coast Guard took command until it closed in 1969 making it property of the state of Minnesota.

By 1971 The Minnesota Historical Society restored the 25 acre site to it's pre-1924 appearance, making it one of the most visited lighthouses in The United States of America.

These buildings are the Keeper's quarters restored to the way they looked around 1924

Greg, your mood-filled fog shot of the Split Rock lighthouse really does justice to its purpose. Most pictures show it in bright sunshine but your take is better, by far! Doug

That's the funny thing about lighthouse pictures - they are buildings that were designed for other reasons than to be easily photographed!!
