Covilhã is one of the few winter-sports resorts in Portugal, it’s on the southeastern slopes of the Serra da Estrela, overlooking the Zêzere River in Castelo Branco district. The city originated as the Roman Silia Hermia, was destroyed by the Moors and was rebuilt (1186) by King Sancho I. Made a city by decree in 1870 was a major textile producer (especially wool), in the 40’s the region suffer a major recession and it was only in the 90’s when the University was built that Covilhã reborn. |
