Going East to the Maghrib

by tafurojo - last update: Jun 9, 2005

Berber Village Hanging Carpets
My first and only trip to Morocco was in May of 2005. I did not know what to expect when arriving and planned for the worst. After hearing horror stories about faux guides and hassles in all the cities I definitely made sure I was ready to handle it. Upon arriving in the city of Tangier and getting almost no hassle at the port I had very high hopes that all the stories I heard were false.

While I found out soon enough that Morocco isn't with out it's downsides, I also found out that it is a much more pleasant place than I had imagined in my head.

The scenery of the High Atlas mountains and the Sahara are great escapes from the busy hassle of almost all Morrocan cities. If you arrive with good spirits and try your hardest to keep them that way than you will have a great time. You may get ripped off here and there but it is never for a lot of money and at no time during my trip did I ever feel my health or life was in danger.

Everywhere you go it seems like they are trying to trick you into buying something or making you feel like you really need it. Play the game with them, it is fun to bargain and haggle.

I recommend Morocco to anyone looking for diversity of landscape and unique city life.
