Whats that smell? Ahhh, its Romance!!

After a day spent in Verona we were on our way to Venice... I was especially excited about Venice. You always wonder what a city streets of water would really be like. Again since we were on a tour we ended up staying in a hotel a few miles outside of the city center so we woke up in a hotel on dry ground with regular streets. The next morning we headed towards Venice itself. Upon driving up it felt very industrial... the city did not have a very warm feeling to it. We took our last steps off of secure dry ground and boarded the "Santa Lucia" and headed towards the Grand Canal of Venice. The smell was rather uninviting and overall Venice in person, has a completely different feel to it than what you see in the movies and in diamond commercials!

I think its the contrast of romance and danger that gives Venice its mystique. We were dropped of at Piazza San Marco and spent the day wondering around as you do in almost all European cities. We took the usual excursion on a gondola through the small canals inside the city and later that night ate dinner at an opera house. There is something in the air in Venice that makes it the romantic city you always think of it as. Just don't dip your eating hand into the canal water when on a gondola.
