No picture can pay it justice for the AWE inspiring view of this canyon when it unfolds infront of you.

After hiking down 5000 feets from south rim to bottom of the canyon, we get to soak our sored and swollen feet in the most welcomed ice cold water of clear creek, lies along side cottonwood camp.

If you ever plan to camp or hike down.......

Mar.24,2002 midnight.
Begin our 18 hours roadtrip towards Grand Canyon.
Arrived the south rim around 4pm. It is snowing, prompting floods of visitors leaving the park. Hurray!!! we got one of the last site at Mathers Campground. Lets go get backcountry permit for hiking and camping down bottom of the canyon. Got to ranger station, it is closed. Oops, doesn't it close at 5pm? Oh....we forgot there is time difference, we are in mountain time zone now.

Waken up by coyote howls around 6am. Took our sweet time cooking breakfast, wonder along the rim, enjoyed the sunrise....
Drove back to ranger station for that backcountry permit. Why so many people? It is only 8am for god's sake! Ranger: "take a number, here you go" 16!!!! #16!!! what does that mean? How many do you issue a day? Ranger: "we don't know. But I do not foresee there is enough opening next couple of days to get to #16. come back tomorrow to check".
Soooo.....our itinary for the next 5 days were: get up at 6am for breakfast, stand in line at ranger station by 8am, leave with a better status ticket, day hike. Repeat the above.

Yippi!!! It is finally our turn. The ranger gave us the precious 2 nights permit to camp at cottonwood.
Moral of the lesson: reserve your permit well ahead of time.

Pros and Cons
  • Pros:Well, it IS one of the 7 wonders
  • Cons:Some planning ahead is needed
  • In a nutshell:Hike 5000ft down to the bottom and experience snow at the rim, dry desert heat at the bottom all within a few hours time.
