A little dustbowl called Rachel

by ClarkRB - last update: May 30, 2007

This is what most of Rachel looks like
In remote Lincoln County Nevada lies a tiny little hamlet that is far from anything and close to nothing. This goes for everything, from gasoline to levels of sanity. Less than 100 people call this place home, and its no wonder. Its an ugly place, even to a desert lover like myself.
NV-375 - The ET Highway
So why Rachel? Well, its location is supposedly the closest to the infamous "Area 51," a government testing site that the Department of Defense neither verifies or denies exists. Nonetheless, people see strange things in the sky, and feel that aliens are within the numbers. The end result is a 2 tone economy - ranching, and anything having to do with visitors from outer space. Even the state of Nevada is in on it, dubbing the state route "The E.T. Highway."
Little Ale'inn - Rachel NV
I really could care less if people believe in aliens or not. It doesn't change my everyday way of life. However, its still one of those places that I can mark off on my list of "zany places to see." Rachel is not your typical Nevada town. Hell, its not even typical of any earth town. And yet, thats part of the appeal. However, don't expect to be wowed. You'll get a quick laugh, and then kick yourself for driving 3 hours one way from Las Vegas.

Pros:"Its the closest you'll get to Area 51"
Cons:"There's really nothing here at all"
In A Nutshell:"There are much better locations in Lincoln County, NV"

My theory on UFOs is this: If they really do exist, set the thing on my desk and let me talk to the driver.

You survived Rachel, NV!!! Why would they not include this wonderful lil town as part of 'Area 51'?! I could only hope to visit here, so thanks for sharing it :D Love your travel tips, as always.

Passing thru Rachel at sunset, we parked along the road for a few shots ... and then sonic boom rolled thru to add to the mood. Plenty of players on the horizon skies, too. ;-]
