Well north of the Arctic Circle along the Brooks Range is a tiny community in an old rustic mining setting. Enter: Wiseman. This town was established on the banks of the Wild and Scenic Koyukuk River in northern Alaska in 1908. Gold seekers abandoned nearby Coldfoot, and came here. Today, it is still an active mining area, so the spirit of Klondike is still very much alive in Alaska.
Push through these pages to get a feel of a town that experiences life like you've probably never known it: 30 days of continuous sunshine, 30 days of complete darkness, -70F winters, 80F summers, and over 200 miles to the nearest grocery store. |

| | From the outsider looking in, Wiseman may not appear to be exactly a cute town. Old cars litter yards, as there really is no place to put them. Its a one lane road through a town that has no stores, no gasoline, and for the most part no services.
But then the outsider realizes that all the houses are the same log cabins their ancestors lived in back in the 1900s. A closer look at the hand painted signs show the folks have not lost their humor in the dead of winter. The outsider then embraces Wiseman for everything it has...and everything it doesn't. |
| | It only seems fair to put together the first page on Virtual Tourist on a simple mining village 75 miles north of the Arctic Circle. Located on the banks of the Koyukuk River, the border of Gates of the Arctic National Park, and on the foothills of the Brooks Range, Wiseman is a perfect stop on the ultimate road trip.
You'll soon find that Wiseman may have a few rusty nails, but given its location it is a pretty incredible little place. You'll end up loving Wiseman for everything it has...and everything it doesn't. |
