Alaska's Number Two

by ClarkRB - last update: Oct 2, 2007

Fairbanks welcomes you!
Welcome to a location unlike most in the United States. Fairbanks is not one of those easy reached destinations. Located at almost 65 degrees north, Fairbanks is the farthest north city of its size in North America, and requires dedication to reach its border.

It’s a tough place, with a tough history and a tough present. If it’s not the hardships endured during the Klondike Gold Rush, or the hardships of folks building the Trans-Alaska pipeline, it’s the weather that makes it tough. During the summer, you’d think you were in the southeast USA with constant thunderstorms and temperatures reaching into the 80s °F and sometimes into the 90s °F. The winter is opposite with average highs and lows both below 0°F.
ClarkRB - Fairbanks Alaska
If the temperatures aren’t enough to make you wonder, try the sun. The far north location makes it possible to play golf at 2AM in June, while the sun barely peaks above the horizon in the winter. But this shouldn’t deter you. What it does do, is allow for the aurora borealis (nothern lights) to display over 200 nights a year.

Fairbanks is the 2nd largest city in all of Alaska, but only clocking in 31,000 residents. Its known as the Golden Heart, and it’s the hub of the interior. Its also a good place to set up shop for many Alaska adventures. From the rough drive up to the Arctic Ocean, the hiking through Denali Natioanl Park or the bush rides up to Gates of the Arctic…Fairbanks is going to be as close to civilization as you’ll be able to get.
Fairbanks, just before the first snow
If Fairbanks is in your itinerary, there are many things you’re goin to want to plan. Out here, its survival of the fittest. Can you handle the rough edges of Fairbanks, or are you going to crawl back to Seattle with your tail between your legs? Interior Alaska: it isn’t for the faint of heart.

But it is, Alaska's number two.

Hey there - this is from a Fairbanks immigrant; thought you'd be interested to hear that BW closed. Can't imagine why. FWIW; the Westmark is generally pretty decent, and Sophie Station is pretty good.
