Kangwon-do Province Intro Kangwon-do is the farthest Northeast Province in South Korea. It is devided twice. Once by the 38N line, known to once be the North Korea/South Korea border. And once again by the DMZ. Kangwon-do continues on in North Korea, and is the only province split by the most dangerous border in the world. (NOTE: KANGWON-DO IS ALSO SPELLED GANGWON-DO)
For all intense and purposes, I'll stick to the South Korean side, as I have only seen the North Korean side from this side of the DMZ. I've been all over the province, in many forms of vehicles, from a Ford Explorer to a Blackhawk helicopter, so allow me to bring you there virtually. |
| | Away from Seoul With the Capital Chuncheon sitting a comfortable 90km from Seoul's outer rings, Kangwon-do seems to be well void of the problems that plague Seoultukpyolsi and Kyonggi-do Provinces. When travelling on Highway 46 from Kyonggi-do, things actually seem to get more rural and better looking the second you actually cross the border.
The Western Side serves as a paradise for those who love mountain and lake sports. The Eastern Side hugs the Yellow Sea, and has turquoise waters for beach fun. And the Central Area has large mountains with a plethora of buddist temples and ski resorts. |
| | Life in Kangwon-do Kangwon-do is home for me. I reside in the capital city of Chuncheon, a mid-sized city in the 200,000 range. It has been home since Summer of 2003. It was a strange adjustment to live in a place so different from what I am used to.
While being here, I have served as a weather forecaster on an airfield, in arguably the hardest place to forecast for in all of Korea. The weather here is no easy thing to forecast with the lack of data, and the constant changes.. But I can say I've given it my best shot. Part of these pages will focus on some shots I grabbed while flying around the province. Welcome to Kangwon-do Province. The South Korea experience without the problems of Seoul |

yellowbell Thu Apr 27, 2006 03:41 UTC Hi Bobby, thanks for the Jungdo tips. I might go there this May 1, if only to stay away from the bustling metro that is Seoul. I wonder if there's bus going to Hwajinpo from Chuncheon. | b1bob Sat Oct 2, 2004 20:53 UTC I can't believe I missed this page.
