VERMONT: Ominous, and beautiful

by ClarkRB - last update: Oct 11, 2006

An adventure through Vermont

ClarkRB at the NY / VT border
Note: The following encounter in Vermont is not as much of a travel guide as it is a personal experience. While some tips may be helpful, others are pure memory-driven.

Vermont is mentioned for many reasons, most of them being when answering questions of beauty or where Log Cabin syrup come from. Fall foliage makes this place a destination for those who need to get their “leaf-on.” And considering the majority of the state has mountains and lakes, it does act as sort of a nearby retreat for those wishing to get away from the choked cities like New York, Boston, and Montreal.
Remants of Hurricane Francis chase us

Western Vermont

Since I had never been to Vermont before, it was decided that Katey and I would traverse the state, in hopes of finding out own beauty within the land. We crossed over Lake Champlain onto Vermont Highway 17 (VT-17). I found this region wasn’t really spectacular as we trekked towards Bristol. Things took a major change however after Bristol as we crossed into the Green Mountain National Forest. The road got very windy and the scenery became a 180 from what it was at the New York border. Although it was early September, evidence of the leaves changing colours was already there. It’s gonna be a long winter.
Pristine village along a lakeside

Eastern Vermont

After being disappointed with Montpelier and Barre, we used U.S 2 to continue our path. This was a rolling hills look, and more New England looking towns. I should also mention that the way the storm clouds were hitting the sun, it was giving a glow the region I had never seen so contrasting. Katey and I made up the song “Ominous…Beautiful.” That truly was Vermont in a nutshell. After the rustic town of St. Johnsbury, it was starting to get dark. No moose, no wildlife, and over 400 dead bugs on my window. Vermont was beautiful in many areas, but other area did not look as New England as I had hoped it would. Welcome to the “other VT” besides Virtual Tourist. Welcome to Vermont, through the eyes of ClarkRB.

Nice stuff. Vermont in Fall is high on my wish list - Fall (Autumn here) being somewhat less than spectacular here in Oz where no native trees change colour or lose all their leaves . leyle
