I find Pennsylvania (locally referred to by the initials PA) to be an incredible experience for the traveller. It should be on everyone’s itinerary, and some decent time should be spent here to capture the full flavour.
PA is a difficult place to define; I’ll try the best I can. PA is cold in the winter and warm in the heart. It’s a place of history, education, coal, Amish, and chocolate. It’s green, mountainous, unique, and family-oriented. It’s the Susquehanna, the Pocono’s, the Allegheny, townships, and the Nittany Lions. It’s Wawa, Yuengling, Rolling Rock, Boscoe’s, Eat ‘n’ Parks, and Sheetz. |
| | The second you cross into PA from Maryland you’ll notice that most small towns has kept their downtowns alive and fresh. You’ll find the Amish selling hand-made quilts, coal towns, and dedications to a famous coach by the name of Joe. You’ll see candles in the windows at night of most houses, and a night scene quickly coming to life in and around the cities.
PA does have some other items that many won’t mention: It’s got 2 seasons; winter and road construction. People tailgate here to the point where signs are erected to warn instead of prevent. Liquor must be purchased at government stores. Adult stores line some streets beckoning for the horny men who can’t get a date. Sections of the southwest resemble the poorer regions of West Virginia. The larger cities have bad areas that need to be avoided. A village has been on fire since the 1960s and remains on fire even to this day. |

| | However, in this case, the good of PA outweighs the bad by a long shot. Pennsylvania, in a sentence, is a remarkable place that charms me every time I arrive, and saddened every time I leave. So, to ensure my memories are there forever, while at the same time giving you fine folks a look at what you’re missing, here’s my dedication to Pennsylvania, the Keystone State. I hope I get this one right.
