Getting TO/AROUND: Interstate 10 is the main drag through the state. Florida to the Pacific Ocean, but a good 260 miles plus brings you through Louisiana. Louisiana is notorious for being one of the states with the worst road conditions. Interstate 10 can be in horrible shape through parts of east Louisiana, with many chuckholes and tire shreds in the lanes.

New Orleans gets choked with traffic during rush hour, and the drivers weave in and out of traffic like mad. Luckily, you can bypass I-10 in New Orleans all-together by using Interstate 12 between Hammond and Baton Rouge.

One other thing...many signs along I-10 are in bad shape from Katrina. Look closely at the photo I have provided. You can see that letters have fallen off from New Orleans, and has exposed a letter G at the end, misspelling New Orleans as "New Orleag" (I'm guessing the sign used to say Baton Rouge) Other signs are completely bent out of shape.

Getting TO/AROUND: U.S. 90 serves as a good alternate to use if you don't like Interstate 10. Although it goes back and forth between a freeway and a highway, its a more picturesque highway through the cajun and swamp areas. Much of it is elevated above the swamps, but most exits and crossroads will go right through the swampy areas.

I recommend US 90 over I-10, since you'd get to go through Houma (great cajun food) and Des Allemands (more great cajun food there). Morgan City is your best bet to stock up on road supplies. Add an extra 4 hours on your drive if using this instead of I-10.

    Transportation: Louisiana State Highway 1
  • Tip Rating:
  • 'Mode': AROUND
    Category: Car/Motor Home
Getting TO/AROUND: LA-1 may not be the main thoroughfare in Louisiana, but it literally goes from one end of the state to the other. It starts in the northwest corner on the Texas border in the town of Zylkes all the way down south to Grand Isle State Park. To drive from one end to the other is going to take quite a long time, possibly in excess of 10 hours. It hugs bayous and swamps in Southern Louisiana, and farmlands and plantations on the north. It passes through Cajun Country and passes through large cities like Alexandra and Baton Rouge. But all in all, I believe LA-1 is the best way to see Louisiana, as it pretty much hits up every type of region within the Pelican State.

In the southern part of the state south of I-10, it hugs along the Lafourche Bayou, and on some occasions you’ll be required to stop because of boat traffic. Parts of the road are in pretty bad shape, as Louisiana for the most part has the worst conditions in terms of roads in the USA. Most of the road is okay. Pictured here is LA-1 near Cut-Off, LA. Here you can see the old bridge LA-1 used to use, before it began to fall apart. Now this part of LA-1 is a 2 lane highway, and people bravely fish off of this other bridge that is falling apart.

Parts of LA-1 were heavily damaged during Hurricane Katrina, so contact the Louisiana Dept. of Transportation before taking the southern jog.

Great pages! Thanks so much. A friend and I are going to Thibodaux 4/15 for a week to volunteer with Habitat for Humanity. It's hard to find out much about that part of the state.

I don't know how I missed this page on Louisiana---really remarkable!! You've done the state a favor "selling it" like you have :) We need all the encouragement you can give and I think you've pegged the best things this state has to offer. Awesome job!
