UPDATE 2006: I'VE ADDED OUR PICTURES FROM LOUISIANA POST HURRICANE KATRINA. SOME TIPS BELOW ARE PRE KATRINA. I'VE UPDATED SOME PRE KATRINA TIPS WITH INFORMATION ON POST KATRINA

There are so many reasons why you should make Louisiana your next travel destination. There are many reasons why I've made Louisiana a travel destination a number of times. Louisiana is a state that truly stands out all in its own. You know it the minute you cross the state line, as the greeting is in English and in French.

French? That's right. Louisiana is a bilingual state, where a number of the population has French as a 1st or 2nd language. Boudreaux is a more common last name than Smith. Towns with names like Des Allemands and Pointe a la Hache. And flags adorning symbols of France and Quebec, down to the helmets of New Orleans' Football team The Saints.
Louisiana swamp
Louisiana is a land of swamps, bogs, bayous, marshlands as well as lakes, rivers, and bays. The nature of the land allows for a different enviroment for plants and animals to exist. It made for a different way of life for the people to live. Adjustments were needed to make this place liveable ever since the original Acadians were exiled from French Canada from the English for refusing to conform to their church.

The food, the music, the dance...all different in Louisiana. Hot & spicy cajun and creole dishes will help the international visitor realize there is more to American food than McDonalds. The music of swamp pop, zydeco, and cajun music fills the dancehalls of New Orleans and Lafayette, while the north of the state has more of a southern country influence.
Another friendly Louisiana native
The animals found throughout Louisiana are an adaptation to the land made of water. Swamp Rats like the one I photographed here were accidentally introduced into Louisiana from South America. Bobcats, Cinnamon Doves, Alligators, Armadillos, Crawfish, Pelicans and Herons are just a tiny list of what one can find hiding out in Louisiana.

Overall, Louisiana as a state, is a "things to do" in itself. If you have not been to Louisiana, you really haven't had a proper introduction into my country. This includes those who live in the USA. Seeing Louisiana is more than getting drunk on Bourbon Street or seeing boobs during Mardi Gras. Get out there, and see the real cajun country, not just the media cajun that New Orleans has become.

Pros:"The food, the people, the animals, the landscape"
Cons:"Katrina has changed the shape of Lousiana's future"
In A Nutshell:"There is much more to Louisiana than New Orleans"

Great pages! Thanks so much. A friend and I are going to Thibodaux 4/15 for a week to volunteer with Habitat for Humanity. It's hard to find out much about that part of the state.

I don't know how I missed this page on Louisiana---really remarkable!! You've done the state a favor "selling it" like you have :) We need all the encouragement you can give and I think you've pegged the best things this state has to offer. Awesome job!
