Off The Beaten Path: Tohono O'odham Nation
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • Tohono O'odham is an Indian Reservation far from any of the cities. It sits south of both Tucson and Phoenix, hidden from them by a mountain range. The road is lightly travelled, and very much out of your way, but it's very scenic. There is lots to see in the form of mountanous desert scenes through here, and plenty of pull-outs to get a good photo. The following 4 photos were some I took off AZ-86, the main road through this region.

Scan through the radio stations through here. One of the stations is in the native Indian language O'odham. (P.S. - don't call them Papago, they resent this term) The towns that dot this area are almost 100% Tohono O'odham. Some of their living conditions I would consider to be questionable, the exception being those who live in Ajo. Aside from Ajo, the towns appeared dirty, and lined with thrashed trailers.

Tohono O'odham Indian Reservation is located in Southern Arizona, along the Mexican border, around Kitt Peak and the rest of the Baboquiviari Mountains. AZ-86 from Tucson, or AZ-85 from Gila Bend are the best ways to get here.

Caution: lots of border control agents, have proof that you're legal to be in the United States.

Off The Beaten Path: The Thing Museum
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • All along Interstate 10 there are billboards that advertize in scary script "The THING." It baffles drivers heading in both directions. There is no description as to what the thing is, or even a hint. The only thing you now is that it's near Wilcox, east of Tucson.

You decide to give it a shot. You use Exit 322 and pull up to a building co-shared with a very expensive Dairy Queen and a gift shop. You learn that to see The Thing was going to cost you a dollar a person, however, you'll go through a museum of sorts before reaching "The Thing." The museum itself had some old woodcarvings, some covered wagons, rustic vehicles (one claiming to be Adolf Hitler's)...and The Thing.

So, what is The Thing? That's for you to find out. I drove all that way to see it, so you have to as well. Just south off I-10 Exit 322 between Willcox and Benson. See the following photos from the museum

  • Arizona - Doesn't it look like AZ? It is.

  • When people think of Arizona, many words come to mind. Words like Hot, dusty, cactus, sagebrush, desolation, and forests. Forests? Yes, Forests. Arizona has it all, from the Girls Gone Wild on the Colorado River to the alpine conditions in the Coconino National Forest, all near the Flagstaff region.

It is here that you can sort of “pretend” you’re not in Arizona. Things feel a little more like Colorado out in these parts. The high elevation and the abundant trees make places like the Coconino Forest a very enjoyable and close retreat when the heat down below gets to you.

Another excellent page on one of my favorite states. The monsoon picture was awesome. I saw storm clouds race across the canyon one Nov a.m. Unbelievablke sight. Made me realize I don't hate the rain after all. :)
