  • Nightlife Spot: Itaewon region

Sorry about the guy getting in the way of the photo. Some people think that everyone should cater to their movements. Running out of film, yada yada, didn't really care to grab another shot.

Nonetheless, Itaewon has a plethora of those bars you can drink water-downed drinks at, while women of Filipino or former Soviet countries in there pretend they care about you. Sucker you into buying them a drink that will cost 10X more than the same drink costs for you.

Frequented mainly by ex-pats, Russians, Canadian Teachers and American Servicemen, these places will actually get to be a little on the irritating side. but if it is bar hopping you are looking for, Itaewon has it all. Not hard to find. Look for dumb uncreative names in English or Russian.

Western Bars and Hofs (Korean Bars): Hofs and Live Cafe's
  • Tip Rating:
  • Nightlife Spot: Western Bars and Hofs (Korean Bars)

Here's a look at a typical street of Western Hofs (Korean type bars that cater more toward western influence). People tend to dress moderatly to very when entering. It is not uncommon to drop W100,000 a night in a place like these.

Much nicer, however to go to then what I refer to as "juicy clubs." (Tip coming soon on my 'South Korea' pages) At least at these the drinks are not watered down, and you won't be expected to buy some high pitched woman drinks 10X the price of yours.

A good rule of thumb, if the club says in english "Hof" or "Live Cafe" it is a generally good place to go.

  • Nightlife Spot: Live Music Bar

At the Oasis, located in the Dragon Hill Lodge, there sits a bar with a very good drink list. It seems like most of the drinks are on the pricy side, but I guess that is "atmosphere tax."

Good place to bring your friends and listen to free live music attempt to sing English songs with the lack of the letter L. (AKA...My last name is Clark, but it is pronounced Crark)

There is a last call for alcohol, seems to be about 1AM. Good place to get started though before rolling out to Itaewon Clubs or whatever else you had in mind.

Live Music Bar: All Along 176

  • Nightlife Spot: Live Music Bar

In Seoul, on the outskirts near the Kyonggido border, is a stretch of road past Guri that is lined with club after club. restaurant after restaurant. They are all along "Sol-tukpyolsi Highway 176"

Take your choice of clubbing. Each seems to have it's own theme, and most advertise live music and a cafe atmosphere as well. Mostly Korean artist of course, but a good way to mingle with the swankier citizens.

To get to this area, it's pretty simple. One, I suggest getting a car. It will cost an arm and a leg by a cab. So rent a vehicle, and go northeast on Olympic 88. 88 Will end, veer right and turn into 176 and head east along the river. Go up about 2km, and all along the right side, club after club after club.

This is an example of the live cafe's along 176. For the guys - A bunch or artists you don't know, performing songs you don't know, and talking to girls that you don't know.

For the girls, it's listening to music you don't like, by artists you don't like, and getting hit on by guys you detest. Another great night in Seoul, South Korea :) Of course, the above can be applied everywhere, but mainly along the 176 clubs.

Take 88 Northeast until it ends and turns into Soltukpyolsi 176, Go east 2km or so and numberous bars will be on your left.

Hmmm...bottles of Soju Stacked up in boxes outside. Can't be too bad of a place ;-) Same crowds as the others, usually gets a decent amount of people around 22,00 (10pm for my American friends).

This place is more of a danceclub type place, but still soem other activities like pool, darts, and people watching if that's your bag. Dress comfortable, but not like trash. Free to get into all of these cubs.

    Road House: Live Music

  • Seoul - Road House, and a gargoyle
  • Road House, and a gargoyle

  • Nightlife Spot: Road House

If you haven't figured it out from the other nightlife tips I have brought to the table thus far, the intentions of the clubs are to get you to be attracted to how it looks on the outside. And once you get inside, it is apparent that outside is where they spent all their money.

However, Road House is actually pretty decent. Normally the crowd is a little better, as the spotlight is not so much on the crowd as it is on a live band, usually Thursdays through Saturdays of the rock type.

Dress....uhh....do what you want. Don't go naked. Don't go dressed like a viking. And men, stop it with this "fake cowboy" giddup! Make believe cowboys. Closest they have ever been to a cow is when they stopped to pee at Burger King.

Western Bars and Hofs (Korean Bars): Bob Mar-ree Music
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • Nightlife Spot: Reggae Pub

Located in the Itaewon section of Seoul is a small slice of Jamaica. Called simply "The Reggae Pub" the bar is nicely air-conditioned and serves beer from island countries. Not just red stripe from Jamaica, but other tropical places, even those on the other side of earth like Phillipines and Singapore. We opted for San Miguel, a beer from Manila. Yummy :)

The bartender was a native of the Phillipines..(pics 2 and 3) working to eventually have enough money to immigrate to America. Others in the bar included some students from Kenya(pic 4) , and a Canadian get with two Korean girls at his side. (pic 5)

The music consisted of both old school and new school reggae. From the ska days of The Ethiopians, to the fast moving reggaeton, all the way to good ol' Peter Tosh and Chaka Demus and Pliers. They had a great reggae selection. Many foreigners and ex-pats come here, so its a good place for singles.

    Other Things To Do: 777

  • Nightlife Spot: Casinos

You'll find plentiful places in and around Seoul marked with "777." These are usually casinos and give you the opportunity to walk away with no won. Of course it has the chance to turn 1,000,000 Won into 1,000,000,000,000,000,000 won. (I think thats equivalent to 3 USD.) haha.

Anyhow, the one I prefered to go to was inside Dragon Hill. There was a game called "Elephant King" that had bonus rounds. This is a picture of my wallet after I left. P.S.: Thats all USD 100 dollar bills and a few USD 20 and USD 1 after I exchanged.

    Rio: For the Russians
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • Nightlife Spot: Rio

With its close proximity to Russia, Seoul does have a sizeable Russian and CIS community. This includes much more than the "juicy girls" that you'' spend 10 times the amount for a beer to "spend time with a girl." Clubs in the Itaewon area cater to the Russian community, and in many cases, its going to be who you know if you can even go in.

Note, I'm not dumb. I know that the Russian Mafia is well in place in Seoul. While I never had any problems with them here, I have met people who have...then of course stayed away from them once I found that out.

Russian Clubs play both American pop and Russian pop music, and you'll find its normally frequented by Russian businessmen, russian juicy girls on their days off, and those who have been deemed worthy enough to be allowed inside.

Be careful not to confuse the electronics market with EMart. Emart is actually a department store much like Walmart. You can get electronics there as well, but probably not the same deals as at the electronics market.
