I think the City of Rhodes is worth having its own page... so I've decided to put all tips for the town on this page.
The town Rhodes is situated in the north of Rhodes Island. From there, you have a good view on Turkey (about 8 km away), depending on the weather.
Rhodes was founded 408 BC and has an eventful history. As it was controlled by various powers, you'll find elements of all kind of periods in the Old Town. The impressing City Wall were built by the Knights of Saint John, who bought the island 1306. When the Turks took over 1522, they've built mosques and minarets. From 1912 to 1945, the Italians were in power and finally in 1947, Rhodes felt back to Greece.
Rhodes Town is separated in a new and an old town. The old town is found behind a massive wall and if you go a bit off the beaten path, you will find streets where you'll feel like in Middle Ages (no tourist shops there!). Almost no cars drive through the old town (there wouldn't be much space in these narrow streets!). The new town is lively as well, but the old one is much more interesting!
