| | Fort William is one of the largest towns in the Highlands of Scotland. The town lies at the banks of Loch Linnhe, but unfortunately the busy main road through Fort William goes along the loch so that a walk along the loch is not really a pleasure. The town itself does not have many sights, but there are great attractions nearby and it's a good basis for excursions to explore the highlands. We stayed outside the town in a great cottage for one week and there was much to see and do in this area. Fort William also has lots of B&Bs, there's one after the other at the road to Fort William from direction Glen Coe. Fort William is also called the Outdoor Capital of the UK. The West Highland Way ends here and who doesn't have enough from walking can continue on the Great Glen Way. There's also a cycling track along the Great Glen, in the town you'll find a sports centre and in winter you can ski at the Nevis Range. But what probably mostly attracts visitors is Ben Nevis, the highest mountain of the UK, it's very popular to climb up there! |
