Franche Comté

by himalia11 - last update: Oct 19, 2008

Me in Ornans, the Venice of Franche Comté
Franche Comté, which means "free county" and is called "Free county of Burgundy" in English, is a region in the east of France. It is bordered by Alsace to the North, Switzerland to the East & South-East, the Rhône-Alpes to the South and Burgundy to the West. It consists of the départments Doubs, Jura, Haute-Saône und Territoire de Belfort.
Today, the capital of the region is Besançon, but until the late 17th century it had been Dole. Both are interesting towns worth a visit!

Franche Comté is a pretty big region, with around 16000 square kilometer, so we did not manage to visit all areas. We first spent one week on a houseboat, travelling on the Saône River and the Rhine-Rhône-Canal. Rally great! You can read more on this trip in the travelogue on my Pontailler VT page.

Then we spent another week in a cottage between Besançon and Dole and did several excursion from there, visiting some towns and several natural sites. It's a very nice region, with charming towns, lots of rivers and waterfalls and great landscapes.

Interestingly there were only few tourists and rarely foreigners. But the sights had been well signposted and the towns often had information plates at the most interesting buildings in French, English and German. And when there was a guided tour (which always was in French only) we always could get some slips of paper with information in German. I'm sure they have them in English also. So we usually had no language problem - only in restaurants it could be interesting to encrypt the menu!

Pros:"Great landscape, lots of waterfalls, several caves, nice towns, ..."
Cons:"You'll have to spend a lot of time in your car to visit all!"
