Why I love Istanbul Carpets, mosques, kebabs, salesmen, Ottomans, the Harem. Culture shocks......? You will see for yourself, but the part of the city most tourists visit is actually the area most unlike Europe. Visit away from Sultanahmet and although the mosque call still hangs on the air, the lifestyle is more familiar. Istanbul is entrancing and exciting. I have been a resident since 1993, when I came for a week and fell in love with the sights and sounds (and some of) the smells of this city. No it isn't really different, But it is different. No you don't need to bring toilet paper, deodorants, or any of those usual comforts, Istanbul has them all. Honestly. And wait for the food! The cuisine is rich and diverse. Do not go anywhere near a Big Mac and allow your tastebuds to be enthralled. |
