Increasing numbers of visitors are discovering the beautiful quiet sandy beaches, the tiny fishing viillages and the fantastic food of this unspoilt region of Spain. We discovered it too on a recent trip to the area. It is Spain's greenest region. Most of the region borders the atlantic ocean and the area is reknowned for it's fine seafood and fish. Much of Galicia still has a medieval feel to it. Santiago De Compostella is probably the regions most visited tourist destination. In the Midle Ages it was the third most important place of pilgrimage after Jerusalem and Rome.
To the south of the west coast are 4 large Rias (Inlets) nestled between the pine covered hills. This area is known as Rias Baixas. The beaches are good the scenery fantastic and the climate is much milder than the wilder north. The tiny villages of Combarro and La Guarda are like stepping back in time. The people are welcoming and the relaxed way of life is just what we loved. The largest town in Galcia is Vigo. It is also the biggest fishing port in Spain.
The coastline between Coruna and La Guarda is largely unspoilt with many little baches like this one.
We spent a couple of hours on this beach. No ice creams, no fancy hotels, no noise, just people realxing and enjoying the mild weather in late September.
- Pros:Stunning coastline, fabulous beaches and wonderful food
- Cons:Not enough holidays in the year to enjoy more of it!!

We have seen so little of Spain - this looks a beautiful region and one we should explore some day. And as for that seafood platter - yum!!
Thanks a million for your beautiful page full of very valuable tips on the region I will visit in a few days. Haha, I have to follow you and try some seafood there!
Absolutely wonderful Galicia pages
Definitely looking forward to visit Galicia!
This sounds just perfect. It certainly looks it. How was Malta?
Thanks for sharing your Galicia photo's & info Natalie. It's the one part of Spain i have yet to visit & your page has helped me make up my mind to go, Darren.
Lovely, Nathalie :-) I was in Galicia years ago, and liked it very much for the serenity and people and landscape and food of course :-) Ahh, I must go back :-))
Oh isn't this just marvellous place to retire or have a second home (wink, wink) ... x
I planned to go to Galicia last year but had to give it up. Thanks to VT I can visit it virtually at least. Thanks for a nice page.
Galicia is one part of Spain I haven't visited yet. Seems I have missed something. This seafood-tip made me hungry ... hmmm yummy
