The haunting present of the horrific past I came here with a friend in December 2006 and took the guided tour that was on offer. It was well worth the money with a Polish tour guide who was so passionate about the history of not only this place but all of Poland and what happened during those dark years of the 1940's We were taken to Birkenau by bus and learned more of what happened there. When we came back to Auschwitz we were then taken on a guided tour of the camp and the guide explained in great detail about each of the buildings and there was also a film to watch with real footage. The film was very moving. Someone once told me that when you enter the famous gate at Auschwitz there are no birds. It is true or was it just the day we visited? Very spooky indeed. |
