Intoxicating Ieper (Ypres)

A walk along the ramparts
We are lucky enough to live very close to the ferry terminal in Dover. Sometimes we only decide to go across to Belgium or France the night before as we did in this case.
It actually workred out cheaper than going to London for the day on the train!
We landed in Dunkerque at 11am local time and took the smaller roads to Ieper thus avoiding the busy and often fast motorways in the area. An hour and twenty minutes later we were in Ieper
Ieper has certainly got some stories to tell. Not all good. Virtually destroyed in the first world war it has been lovingly restored and is a town of friendly people, lots of lovely restaurants and architecture to admire.
We spent a cold February day here and now want to return here to witness the 'Last Post ceremony' which is held at the Menin Gate each night at 8pm. We also want to experience some of the local cuisine on offer too.

A poem that is so famous

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep,
though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

by John McCrae, May 1915

You are so fortunate to be able to slide over to Belgium so quickly. It's a destination on my list of "to do's". Interested in this Cloth Hall. Beautiful landscape and waterways.

Natalie, lovely little page with brilliant photos. Belgium is a real paradise for chocolate lovers .... after Switzerland of course. ;-)

I had the best chocolates ever when I was in Ieper but I didn't see the ones shaped like cats or I would have bought some :-)

When I was a child in Illinois our primary school principal used to read that poem to us in a school assembly every year on Poppy Day.
