Exploring Oporto

by nhcram - last update: Jan 7, 2007

View over Oporto
Porto is Portugal’s second largest city and has a superb location at the mouth of the Rio Douro. Its old town has a mish mash of tiny streets that have lots of hidden restaurants and shops. The historic city is famous for being the home of Port. The city is so full of interest that many visitors do not venture any further which is a pity as the area around it is so full of charm with terraced vineyards and pretty countryside.

I went south from Lisbon when I visited Portugal, but it looks like the beautiful architecture in Porto is a good reason to go back and head north.

Porto seems to be the most daring and progressive city in Portugal, eh?:)

I also loved Porto, its churches, azulejos and Lello bookshop. Good page.

Thanks for the overview of Oporto, a place legendary for its port (the drinking kind). I would like to visit here someday.
