Summer Resort of Portugese Royalty

by nhcram - last update: Sep 21, 2007

Lord Byron had already seen his fair share of the continent when he wrote to his mother from Sintra, calling it 'perhaps the most delightful village in Europe.' Today the same cool gentle climate and garden type setting that made this a favourite summer residence of Portugese kings for more than 500 years provides the city dwellers of Lisbon and tourists alike an idyllic respite from the hustle and bustle of the city.
Commanding the highest peak are the 8th century ruins of a Moorish citadel, the Castelo de Mouros with beautiful views to the sea.
You can stay in a dreamy 18th century palace built by the Dutch consul to Portugal.
There is a beautiful monastery that takes you back in time and really makes you think about how life was for those that lived there. There is of course the little town of Sintra where you can enjoy a really good meal in one of the many restaurants there.

Serra de Sintra Tour

The round trip from Sintra follows a dramatic route over the top of the wooded area called the Serra. The first part of the trip is quite a challenging drive with lots of hairpin bends and narrow, steep, shaded roads that seem to be leading nowhere! Some of the roads are poorly kept also. It also passes through dense forest areas ad every now and then you get amazing views over the Atlantic coast. Well worth hiring a car to do this lovely rout which is a bout 22 miles (36KM) long.
Lots of lovely picnic areas on route.
WORD OF ADVICE..... Buy a good map to direct you round.

Pros:"The nature reserves of the Tagus and Sado offer a quiet retreat."
