  • In the Puerto del Sol is the most important statue in the square that of the Bear and the Strawberry tree.
This is the symbol of the city of Madrid but it is not really a strawberry tree! It is a Madrono tree.

  • The Puerta del Sol is the geographical centre of Spain.
There is a stone slab which marks Kilometer zero. This is the starting point for the 6 main highways in Spain
It is a very busy square and is a popular meeting point for people of all ages.

  • On the outskirts of the city to the west is the Casa de Campo. Formally hunting grounds it is now a 1800 hectares site of shrubland containing a zoo an amusement park, swimming pools, tennis courts and plenty of places to sit and picnic with friends and family.
The most fun way to get there is by the Telerifico. A gondola style cable car. It rises high above Madrid and the trip from the city to the park is 11 minutes. It seemed more like 111 minutes to me but it was worth it for the photo opportunities. You can also get there by metro and bus.

Reina Sofia Museum: Modern Art in abundance

  • Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia is a fantastic museum and is in one of Europes largest buildings. It houses Spain's national museum of Modern art including the world famous Guernica by Picasso. There are 2 glass lifts that slide up and down the outside of the former 18th century hospital. 2 floors have permanent collections and the other two contain temporary collections.
Not being a modern art lover I found it strange but imaginative. Well worth a visit.

Things To Do: Egypt in Spain??

  • In 1968 Spain received the Temple of Debod as a token of gratitiude for the aid provided in saving Abu Simbel. Templo de Debod was reconstructed and opened in 1972. With it's unique characterisitics it is one of the few architectural testimonies from Ancient Egypt that can be seen in Spain.
It is free to enter and is open for most of the year.

Things To Do: Zoo - Aquarium

  • If I go away with my friend I have to visit the local zoo!. Located in the Casa de Campo this zoo has over 2000 animals including snakes and tigers. It also has sharks in the aquarium. The park has been relandscaped which makes it fairly attractive as zoos go. I did feel that some of the areas that the animals were housed in were quite small.
There are plenty of places to eat, drink and rest those tired feet.
Entrance was 13.50 Euros in January 2005.

  • One of the world's great museums is in a lovely building in the heart of Madrid. All the rooms have high ceilings and the style of the building is very grand indeed. The kind of art in this museum is just what I like - OLD and paintings I understand. It is totally different to the Reina Sofia. Works of art by famous painters such as Goya, Velasquez, Caravaggio and Rubens grace the walls of the Prado. I really enjoyed my afternoon here.

Things To Do: Atocha Railway station

  • You could be forgiven for thinking that the Atcoha railway station looks like a botanical garden...It does. We sat and watched the world go by in this peaceful part of the city. Plants growing high and wide, making this station the nicest I have ever seen. People came and went but nobody seemed in a hurry. It was a strange quiet place and one worth visiting.
Atocha is used for most destinations to the south and west of the country

  • The Jardines de Sabatini (Sabatini Gardens) are to the north of the Royal Palace.
Built in the 1930's on the site of the old Palace stables, they were designed by Sabatini.

  • Like many ctities Madrid has it's special places and the Plaza Mayor has to be one of them. It is traffic free and can hold up to 50,000 at any one time. The bars and restaurants around the square make a great place to people watch and rest those tired feet. The casa de la Panaderia on the north side dates from 1590 but the murals were added much later. On Sunday mornings it is a tradition for stamp collectors to fill the arcades that surround the Plaza and nowadays anything that can be collected can be traded here.
