    • We were lucky enough to meet Anne. VT member Xemx. We enjoyed a wonderful evening sitting on the terrace of an Italian restaurant overlooking the bay of St Julians.
    We are going back to Malta in October and hope to meet up with Anne again.

    • When you walk from Sliema round the headland to St Julians you pass this large imposing church. It is beautiful especially when all lit up at night.
    There has been a church here since 1859 and was dedicated to Our Lady of Mount Carmel, built by the Confraternity of Our Lady of Mount Carmel of Valletta; the church was rebuilt in 1877 and given to the Carmelite friars who rebuilt it in 1900. In 1958 it was rebuilt again and in 1974 it became the parish church of the area.

    • On the bay at Spinola is this statue. If you look in the water, the reflection spells out LOVE. The only problem is if there are boats in the way the whole effect is spoilt!

    • Just outside the city gate and the fortified walls of Valletta is Freedom Square. In the middle of the square is the Triton fountain which was built in the 1950's. The bus station is built around the square and although it looks like chaos it is in fact very organised.

    • The main city gate into Valetta. This gate forms part of the city fortifications and is a great place to people watch. A very busy place at all tme of the day. Stret vendorssell bread cakes and drinks surround the area.
    It is the fourth to have stood at the entrance and was built in the early 1960's.

    • Malta At War Museum is situated in one of the three cities near to Valetta.
    The tour starts with a film showing original footage from world war two and then the tour continues with a guide through the air-raid shelter. The tour shows how the people lived during those dark days of the 1940’s
    The shelter is complete with a birthing room and infirmary.
    This tour is not for the claustrophobic of you as some of the tunnels are narrow and also very low.
    Well worth a visit.

    • In a narrow street to the west of the city of Valetta lies one of the oldest theatres in Europe. Teatru Manoel.
    It is certainly the oldest theatre in the Commonwealth. Retaining its original function as a theatre it was built in 1731 by the Portuguese Grand master Antonio Manoel de Vilhena.
    The beautiful wooden boxes each have a vanity mirror in them.
    You can visit the theatre for a guided tour for LM1.70 (3.95 Euro).
    You will see some of the props used and also some of the costumes worn on stage.
    Excellent value in my opinion.

    • Founded in 1570 it was the first functional church in the city of this small island. It is known as the Basilica of our lady of Carmel. It is special to me, as my mother’s cousin was a priest with the Carmelites of Malta.

    • Officially the residence of the Grand Masters of the Knights until 1798 it is now home to Malta's parliament. It houses the armoury, which has a magnificent collection of weapons from the time of the Knights of Malta. The courtyards by which you enter are so pretty. Ticket price includes entrance to the armoury also.

    • In Republic Street about a third of the way down on the left is a great way to learn about Malta and the museum quite often has exhibitions in it. I was so mad that I did not go to the Terracotta warriors exhibition when I visited in June and was determined not to miss the Carravagio exhibition this time. It was excellent and well worth the visit.
    The entrance cost to this museum also includes entrance to the Fine Arts museum nearby. 4 Maltese Lira gets you into both (You have to visit them on the same day)

     A Great place to locate good restaurants in Malta and Gozo is www.maltastreetmap.com. Great map for tourists visiting Malta and Gozo. The only place online that can map any street address in Malta and Gozo.
