Maltese- Deep Down

by nhcram - last update: May 26, 2009

View over the harbour.
Since leaving Malta when I was 2 years old, I have been back several times. I still have many relatives living there.

History

Great Britain formally acquired possession of Malta in 1814. The island supported the UK through both World Wars and gained the George Cross in 1942 for the bravery shown during WW2. Malta became a republic in 1974.

Geography.

Malta lies south of Sicily in the Mediterranean Sea.
What most people call simply "the island of Malta" is, to be accurate, a group of islands consisting of Malta, the largest, Gozo and the smallest, Comino.

Tourism.

Malta has and probably always will be a very popular place to visit. It is steeped in history, has friendly people and most of all a very relaxed way of life.
There are not many sandy beaches on the island of Malta but there are plenty of rocky ones to lie and take in the views around you.
There are plenty of hotels of varying sizes and standards. There are many resorts to choose from Bugiba and Qawra in the north East of the island with Sliema and St Julian?s further south towards the capital of Valetta.
The street where I first lived.
My last visit was in June 2007 and I visited the street where I spent the first 2 years of my life. I found the house and it was exactly as my parents had described and I must admit I got quite emotional.
Chris and I did a lot of walking in the area where my parents set up home and where my grandad used to work. It was the first time I had gone back and wonder why I had not done it before.

Pros:"Friendly people, relaxed way of life"

In A Nutshell:"A great place to unwind and get away from it all."
