  • The Bridge of Sighs ( Ponte dei Sospiri ) connects the Doge's Palace ( Palazzo Ducale ), seat of government and the highest courts, to the New Prisons ( The Palazzo of the Prigioni Nuove ).

It is a closed and covered passageway extending over the canal.

  • Four kilometres long the canal begins at the Piazza San Marco and ends at the Piazza Roma.

Three bridges cross the canal, the wooden Accademia, the Station and the most famous Rialto Bridge.

The Rialto Bridge was originally built in wood. A competion was held for a new design. Finally in 1588 a plan by Antonio da Ponte was accepted and a stone bridge was built.

The Venetian noblemen built grand houses along the canal. There are also many fine churches housing paintings by artists such as Tintoretto and Titian .

  • The Doge's Palace (Palzza Ducale) houses the Venetian high court , the Maggior Consiglio and the doge's residence.

Walking around the palace you cannot help but stare up at the beautiful carved and painted ceilings and walls.
