  • If your over in Strahan and want some extra peace and quite head out to Lettes Bay for an hour or two. This is a small fishermans' shack community established in the 1930s for retired miners from Queenstown's Mt Lyell Copper Mine. Here you can kick back and meet the locals, some of whom have settled in, fish and admire the tranquility of the place. This village consisting of about 30 small shacks is located at a tiny sheltered cove on Macquarie Harbour, 5 Km east of Strahan.

Off The Beaten Path: Tasmania: Three Hummock Island
  • Tip Rating:
  • One of the most off the beaten path places you'll find when in Tasmania. However it's not so difficult to get to as you can charter a light plane flight, which is a real thrill in it's self. Once on the island you'll be met by it's only permanent long term resident Robert Alliston. He is a wealth of knowledge when concerning the island and it's natural heritage. One can fly from either Devonport, Wynyard, Smithton or King Island.

  • Oatlands is an historic township just off the Midlands Highway some 90 Km north of Hobart. It is a towm of approx 1000 inhabitants and boasts the largest number of Georgian era buildings of any Australian town outside of Hobart, as much of the town was laid out in the early 1830s a military garrison. There was even mention in the early days of moving the state capital to here - one can only imagine what it would have been like now. A kind of ye olde worldly Canberra? Some buildings have been lovingly restored by the local cummunity while other remain in a state of almost disrepair awaiting the renovaters dream.

  • Bothwell is another almost forgotten old world township of pastoral charm. It sit strides the Lake Highway some 70Km out of Hobart. It is the gateway town to the many famed fishing spots of the Central Plateau lakes. It boast a number of small but historically important buildings, while the impressive Nant Estate can be found a short distance to the north of the town. Australia's oldest golf course can also be found at Bothwell which doubles as a sheep paddock!
