Siberia - Irkutsk

Irkutsk has the feeling of a big frontier town. It's main street Ul Karl Marxa is a show piece of remaining fin de siecle architecture while modern European culture has made inroads here as the Russian econemy picks it's self up.

Irkutsk all started back in 1652 as a military outpost, but it wasn't really until the 19th century when things sarted to boom with the discovery of large resources of gold in the region. The rappidly growing town was established as Siberia's administrative capital. During this period much decadent and opulant building of murchant stores and homes took place, aswell with the first connection to Europe with the openning of the Trans Siberian Railway the town first experienced tourism.
