Bendigo, approaching 100,000 people, is one of Australia's best preserved historic centres. While it is steadily growing and booming once more, great care has been made into maintaining the city's Victorian heritage. Old money lingers here, while new money is flowing with many new developments. Nonetheless the city's future survival, as a prosperous regional centre, is crucially dependant upon the town's water supply. By mid 2006 Bendigo had reached crisis levels when concerning the town's reservoir levels. The main storage area at Lake Epperlock was down to some 5% of capacity! Proposals have been made to pipe in water from the Goulburn River some 100KM away, it also harshly effected from Australia's worst drought in recorded history. |
