Tasmania's World Heritage

It was through the pioneering spirit of the environmentalist, Austrian born immigrant, Gustuv Weindorfer who first focused people's attention towards Cradle Mountain. Here, at Cradle Valley in 1910, he built from local material his Weldheim Chelet retreat and opened it's doors to city folk who could appreciate nature and the great outdoors. However the years to follow were an up hill battle with foresters and government to retain this area in it's most pristime state. After his death in the early 1930s the area was made a protected nature reserve and in the late 1940s it became a National Park. In the mid 1980s this large area sarounding and including Cradle Mtn and Lake St Clair were given UNESCO World Heritage statis.

If you walk the Overland Track, what you take in must come out! There is now a AU$100 fee for people who want to walk the Overland Track between the months of October to April, when walking number sour.

The Overland and Cradle Mountain sound like good spots to get acquainted with the Backcountry of Tassie.

HI! Sean: The cyclist bit in you reminded me of my buddy in Sydney though he did not name his bicycle! Cradle Mountain is a great place - truly enjoyed it! Cheers!
