Hobart: Global Village | The old and the new in Hobart |
Hobart the capital of Australia's island state Tasmania is presently experiencing a dynamic shift. While retaining charm and solitude it however is no longer the sleepy hollow it once was. In other words it's been discovered!
Hobart is rappidly becoming a world class town with an international flavour to it. With mass tourism sweeping the world - Hobartians have managed to preserve their much loved city. Nonetheless property prices have gone through the roof here with homes being snapped up by investors from Sydney and Melbourne. This has only widened that historical divide, one which Tasmanians have experienced from the earliest days of European settlement.
There is no other town or city in Australia which has so many existing colonial era buildings preserved or restored than Hobart. Walking the city streets and inner suburbs of Hobart one feels this presence and gets an over whelming historical perspective to the place. While this is so the international traveller can find a footing here for a few days or weeks. I have returned to Hobart many times over the past ten years and consider it my second home.
Hobart, at it's present site at Sullivans Cove on the Derwent River, was established in 1804. Today it has a mere 200,000 inhabitants - if one includes all it's stragling suburbs, but is reasonably well serviced due to it's state capital statis and relative isolation. While one can get a certain taste of city life, there is always that constant reminder that nature is but a few blocks away. Mt Wellington at 1270m looms over this deep harbour port with it's quaint fishing fleet. Snow, although intermittant, can dust "the Mountain" even in summer months, sending a chill down the colonial era streets. This said a cool winters day can often be interupted by a burst of sunshine. Infact Hobart enjoys more sunlight hours per year than Melbourne! |
| | Tasmania: Hobart Preservation has been the mind set of most Hobartians giving this city alot to offer for it's size. It is the most historically intact city in Australia architecturally. |
