Launceston is Tasmania's unofficial northern "capital". This city of 100,000 people has alot to offer and still prides its self as Hobart's rival. Launceston is also dramatically different to Hobart, it is located inland at the head of the Tamar river Valley from where flows the the South and North Esk Rivers. Like a minor vertion of Melbourne there are many parks and gardens, Victorian era architectures, fountains etc.

In true rivalry to Hobart's Cascade Brewery, Launceston has since the mid 19th century maintained its own brewery. Well local of origin and now multi-nationally owned the Boages Brewery produces some of Australia's best beer.

In the late 1970s these Japanese monkeys were given to the City of Launceston as a gift. They have remained and more recently a the enclosure was spruced up a bit.
